Sliplining vs. Pipe Bursting: Selection for Capacity, Alignment, and Cost

Introduction

Selecting the right trenchless method can determine whether a project preserves flow capacity, enables upsizing, or minimizes surface disruption at the lowest total cost. Method snapshots

  • Sliplining: insert a new pipe within the host pipe to restore structural performance with minimal excavation. This generally maintains service with low surface disruption and predictable alignment because the liner follows the existing pipe path.   • Pipe bursting: replace an existing pipe along its path using a bursting head and install a new pipe in the same run. When upsizing is required (pipe bursting)

Owners pursuing capacity increases commonly select pipe bursting to install a new, larger-diameter pipe while avoiding full open-cut replacement. Typical drivers include:

  • Growth or level-of-service upgrades where existing sewers or water lines are undersized.

  • Bottlenecks identified in master planning where diameter increases reduce surcharge or pressure losses.

  • Replacement needs where a new-material pipe plus capacity gain offers better lifecycle value than lining the host.

Sliplining is well-suited when the host alignment should be preserved and construction access is constrained—for example, under pavements, sensitive streetscapes, or utilities where minimizing excavation and restoration is essential.
